CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Charlotte community leaders celebrated the grand opening of the West Boulevard Extension.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday morning on Dixie River Road, between Interstate 485 and the Catawba River. The road, which features separated bike lanes and sidewalks, will be a vital artery for the future River District.

Crescent Communities project leaders and Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles attended the ceremony. The new divided four-lane road was developed in partnership with the city.

The River District mixed-use community will span about 1,400 acres with hundreds of homes.

“The ability to have affordable housing and people that will be able to participate,” Lyles said. “The city has a policy where we want to make sure if we’re contributing, that 30 percent of that to be in place where people can afford to live here as well, so we’re excited for this development.”

Charlotte leaders say the expansion is a display of their commitment to environmental sustainability, and helping foster an active lifestyle.

Earlier this month, Mecklenburg County commissioners approved the extension of Garrison Road, also to Dixie River Road to alleviate River District traffic and allow industrial buildings to be constructed.
